Privacy Policy
What this site collects, what it does not, and what changes if you send us a message.
You can read every page of this site without giving us anything. We do not require an account, and we do not sell or trade personal information. The only information we hold ourselves is what you choose to send us in a message.
Who this policy is about
This policy covers PNG Law Explained and the pages published at this website. It does not cover any other site you reach by following a link from here.
Reading the site
You do not need to identify yourself to read anything on this site. There is no sign-up, no login, and no paywall.
Server logs
Like effectively every website, the server that delivers these pages may keep standard technical logs of requests — the address requested, the date and time, the type of browser, and the network address of the device making the request. These logs exist to keep the site running and secure. They are generated by the hosting provider rather than by us, and we do not use them to identify individual readers.
Analytics
As this policy stands, the site runs no third-party analytics and carries no advertising. There is no analytics script, no advertising network, no social media tracking pixel and no cross-site tracking.
We intend to add audience measurement (to understand which guides are actually used) and advertising (to help meet the cost of running the site). Both would involve a third party — in all likelihood Google — receiving information about your visit, and both would set cookies.
This policy will be updated before either is switched on, to name the provider, say what is collected, and explain how to opt out. Where consent is required, you will be asked for it first. The date at the top of this page will change when that happens.
Cookies
At present this site sets no cookies for tracking, advertising or profiling. Your browser may store ordinary technical data as part of loading any web page, and the search box works entirely inside your browser — what you type into it is not transmitted to us or to anyone else.
If advertising or audience measurement is added, that will change: those services set cookies of their own. This policy will be updated first, and the cookies in use will be described here.
If you send us a message
If you contact us by email at the address given on the Contact page, we receive what you choose to send: your name, your email address, and the content of your message.
What we do with it
- Read it, and reply where a reply is appropriate.
- Act on it, if it is a correction or a suggestion for an article.
- Keep it for as long as it is useful for those purposes, then delete it.
What we do not do with it
- We do not add you to a mailing list. There is no newsletter.
- We do not sell, rent, trade or share your information with anyone for marketing.
- We do not publish your name or message without your permission.
Email is not a secure or confidential channel, and no lawyer–client relationship or legal professional privilege arises from contacting us — see the Contact page and the Disclaimer.
Do not send us confidential documents, original documents, evidence, or details of a matter you are involved in. If you need to give those to someone, give them to a lawyer.
Form handling
The contact form on the Contact page is delivered by Formspree (Formspree, Inc., United States). When you submit the form, what you typed — your name, your email address, the subject you chose and your message — is transmitted to Formspree, which stores it and forwards it to us by email. Formspree holds that information under its own privacy terms as well as this policy, and its servers are outside Papua New Guinea.
If you would rather not have a third party handle your message, write to us directly by email instead. The address is given on the Contact page and reaches the same mailbox. Nothing on this site requires you to use the form.
The form carries a hidden anti-spam field. If it is completed — which only an automated system would do — the submission is discarded.
Hosting
This site is delivered by a hosting provider, which necessarily processes requests for pages in order to serve them, and which may keep the technical logs described above under its own terms.
Children
This site is intended for a general adult audience. We do not knowingly collect information from children. Nothing on the site is directed at children or designed to encourage them to send us information.
Your choices
- You can read anonymously. Nothing on the site requires you to identify yourself.
- You can ask what we hold. If you have written to us and want to know what we still have, ask, and we will tell you.
- You can ask us to delete it. If you have written to us and want your message deleted, ask, and we will delete it unless we are required to keep it.
- You can block cookies and scripts in your browser. This site is built to work with JavaScript disabled; the menu, the search box and a few conveniences are enhancements, and every page reads and navigates without them.
Other websites
This site links to courts, government bodies, legal aid providers and support services. Once you follow a link you are on someone else’s website, governed by their privacy practices, not ours. We have no control over what they collect.
Changes to this policy
If what the site collects changes — because audience measurement or advertising is added, or the hosting or form arrangements change — this policy will be updated to describe the new position before the change takes effect, and the date at the top will change.
